General Degree Program Requirements
Southern Evangelical desires students who are committed to Jesus Christ. Enrollment is open to qualified students of all
Christian denominations and fellowships, without distinction of sex, race, disability, or ethnic derivation, who desire to engage in
serious theological study in preparation for Christian service. Students are required to read, understand, and respect our
statements of purpose and faith. The purpose of this institution is to train men and women for Bible-based Christian ministries.
Therefore, in addition to the academic requirements below, there are spiritual requirements for admission in keeping with this
purpose. These include Christian experience, spiritual growth, call to service, and gifts for ministry.
The prerequisite for any seminary degree program is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution or the
equivalent. In order to be admitted to a seminary degree program a student should have a bachelor¡¦s degree from an
institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education, or the equivalent. He
or she must have maintained at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the college program. If one does not meet the
undergraduate GPA requirement, he may be granted a Provisional Admission. This requires that the student maintain a 2.5 or
higher GPA on the first semester of work at SES (or on the first course in the case of an Distance Education student) in order to
be granted full admission.
Bible College requirements include a High School diploma and/or an Associate level degree from an accredited college. A
student also must have maintained a better than average grade point average in his or her undergraduate program. If one does
not meet the High School GPA requirement, he may be granted a Provisional Admission. This requires that the student
maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA on the first semester of work at SES (or on the first course in the case of an Distance Education
student) in order to be granted full admission.
Certificate & Diploma Program Requirements
Southern Evangelical Seminary also provides for persons desiring this type of training but not qualifying for the graduate degrees
through certificates in the appropriate fields which may be granted upon the completion of the prescribed study programs.
Students who do not meet the necessary requirements for Masters / Bachelors degree programs may petition for entrance into
one of the Certificate / Diploma programs. Acceptance into these programs is contingent upon the candidate meeting the
following criteria:
•
Should have demonstrated pastoral or leadership skills for Christian ministry
•
Should have completed at least two years of an undergraduate program or the equivalent
•
Should be approved by the Admissions Committee for entry into such program
.
The course of study for the Certificate or Diploma is exactly the same as its corresponding degree program and can be upgraded
to the corresponding degree once the necessary requirements are met (which can be done before, after, or at the same time as,
the coursework at Southern Evangelical). For example, when, a bachelor’s degree is obtained by a Certificate Program student,
that Certificate may be upgraded to its corresponding Masters degree upon petition to the faculty. If more than five (5) years
have transpired since graduating, the student may be asked to complete supplementary work (to update his or her education)
before being granted a degree.
Acceptance Limitation
The time between acceptance to SES and the beginning of classes for all degree and non-degree programs is one year. If an
accepted student has not begun classes within a year of acceptance the student must re-apply.
English Language Requirement
Applicants who are not native English speakers are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting satisfactory TOEFL
(Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores
taken within two years prior to the date of application. The minimal computer based score is 250 (MAA 280 or better). Information
about TOEFL may be obtained from TOEFL.ORG.
